The atmosphere on the boat was new to me; it was actually a little bit strange to be able to walk for hours around the ship, but know that I was at sea. I will never forget the time I walked up to the main deck at the wee hours of the morning, peering out into a vast emptiness that went on for eternity, a black-blue sheet draped over the world, with only a few pinhole-sized drops of white stars thrown across the sky. When we finally stopped on land, I was so excited at the prospect of being able to hear different languages and experiencing customs. The accommodations were lovely, though a bit cramped during the day, with three women trying to fix their hair at one mirror, but the restaurant eating schedule was a bit strange. We had an assigned dinner time which was completely unlike the/our usual time at home, though I understand the need to schedule. The food was always hot and delicious, and I was able to try different fare than I would regularly eat at home. I was terrified by the amount of food available at any given point in time, but I recognize the desire to cater to everyone.

After a week we will arrive on Antarctica proper. I would go and see the penguin colonies. I would ride a snow scooter on the virgin snows; I would ski towards the mountains. If I have a chance I would like to go diving in a special suit to see the sea lions play under the ice. Most people would go on a cruise to a tropical destination, most people would go to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean or Asia, but I would choose the frozen worlds of the Southern Ocean.

The bathrooms were really where you noticed the size constraints. My 6 foot 5 husband had a bit of trouble maneuvering into the tiny shower, but he made it work.
