I was so excited last October when I received a phone call from my mother telling me that we’d be spending Christmas day in the high seas. It was a 5 day, 4 night cruise starting December 22nd and going past Christmas. I spent an awful large amount of time deciding what I should take, what was necessary, and what to leave behind. Before I knew it, the day had arrived. This was my first cruise, and to have it on Christmas made it all the more wonderful. I remember the six hour car trip. I remember arriving around noon that day, and boarding the most wonderful ship I’d ever seen. The possibilities were endless. There was so much going on, it was quite overwhelming to start off with. The next five days passed by quicker than I ever thought possible. Between landing onshore, and spending hours on some island I’ve never heard of, and unlimited free food, There was so much to do that I wasn’t able to do everything I wished to. The first day was mostly exploration, learning the layout of the ship, and locations of certain rooms and places.

We were close to the top deck, so it wasn’t too far of a trip to get some ice cream at three in the morning. There were a lot of shows that were put on during the entirety of the cruise. My favourite was a comedian that they had the second night of the cruise. Because it was a Christmas cruise, a lot of his jokes were seasonally related, but it was funny none the less. There were also many audience participation events that were mind bogglingly fun. There was a scavenger hunt, in which the people playing had a list of items that they were required to find within the confines of the cruise ship. It was one of the funniest things I’d ever done. Of course, the funniest day on the ship was December 25th. Sometime during the night, all of the crew decorated the ship, which was a pleasant surprise to wake up to Christmas morning. The day was peaceful and calm and it seemed like everybody on board was getting along perfectly. One thing is for sure, that was the most unforgettable Christmas ever.

The holidays I had on a cruise ship have stayed alive as vibrant memories for over seven years now. The first time I went on a ship was with my parents and four siblings. We flew down to Texas to catch a boat that would later go down on the Mexican coast, to Honduras, and back up.

The atmosphere on the boat was new to me; it was actually a little bit strange to be able to walk for hours around the ship, but know that I was at sea. I will never forget the time I walked up to the main deck at the wee hours of the morning, peering out into a vast emptiness that went on for eternity, a black-blue sheet draped over the world, with only a few pinhole-sized drops of white stars thrown across the sky. When we finally stopped on land, I was so excited at the prospect of being able to hear different languages and experiencing customs. This wasn’t exactly the case, because most of the areas within reach had already adapted a very behaviouristic outlook suited for their idea of Americans. All in all, my family had a great time taking advantage of the spotless beaches, eating local food, and seeking out the tiny places off the beaten path so that we could get a breath of fresh air and really see how the surrounding culture lived. While I loved the sound of the massive boat pushing its way through the sea, my time spent aboard wasn’t my favourite part of the trip.

The accommodations were lovely, though a bit cramped during the day, with three women trying to fix their hair at one mirror, but the restaurant eating schedule was a bit strange. We had an assigned dinner time which was completely unlike the/our usual time at home, though I understand the need to schedule. The food was always hot and delicious, and I was able to try different fare than I would regularly eat at home. I was terrified by the amount of food available at any given point in time, but I recognize the desire to cater to everyone.

The Rhine is one of the longest rivers in Western Europe, and has been an important waterway for various civilisations since at least the days of the Roman Empire. Thanks to some stunning natural features, and the long history of human usage, The Rhine boasts some particularly beautiful and romantic sections which feature ‘fairytale’ medieval castles and fortifications, as well as picturesque towns. It is perhaps unsurprising then that in recent years the river has been attracting an increasing number of passengers to the rhine river cruises provided by operators like Avalon Cruises. Here we look at just a few of the landmarks to be enjoyed on Rhine cruises, and in particular the UNESCO World Heritage Site called the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

The section of the river known as the Middle Rhine lies between the towns of Bingen and Bonn in Germany, and is a particularly popular stage which features in practically all Rhine Cruises. The historic town of Koblenz occupies both banks of the river at the point where the Rhine meets the Moselle, and indeed the name Koblenz is in fact derived from the Latin for ‘confluence’. Thanks to the strategic importance of Koblenz through the ages there are historic fortifications both within and surrounding the city, with the nearby, neo gothic Stolzenfels Castle one of the most striking examples.
Another of the top attractions of Koblenz is the newly built cable car, which crosses the Rhine and ascends along some 850m up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, opposite Koblenz. The 18 cabins feature glass bottoms, and offer an excellent view of the heart of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

Koblenz is a popular stopping point for Rhine cruises, both those heading upriver from Holland to Switzerland, and those travelling the opposite way round. For those that have just left Cologne, Koblenz is often the last stop before entering the Rhine Gorge.

The Rhine Gorge stretches some 65 km between Koblenz and Bingen, and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. The soaring walls of the Rhine Gorge reach 200m in height as some points. The stand out feature of this dramatic section of the river is universally held to be the Loreley Rock (sometimes spelled Lorelei), on the eastern bank of the Rhine. According to local folklore, The Loreley Rock was the home of a beautiful siren, who lured sailors into a collision course with the rock through mesmerising beauty of her singing. Thankfully, on the modern Rhine cruise the appearance of the Loreley Rock is now usually marked by the popping of corks rather than the cracking of the hull!

While the weather will often be clement during the summer season, those packing before heading off on Rhine cruises are advised to bring some warmer clothes, particularly those who plan to be on deck in the evening.

The Antarctic… I have dreamed about going on a cruise for as long as I can remember. Modern cruise ships are equipped with all the luxuries one could imagine: a casino, a nightclub, a cinema, a spa, wonderful restaurants, theatres with ongoing entertainment and a ballroom to dance the night away. But if I ever go on a cruise ship, it would not be for the entertainment value, but for something completely different. I would go on a cruise to explore Antarctica. I love nature, I love exploring new places and above all I love to explore unspoiled nature.

Antarctica is one of the few completely unspoiled places left in the world. Normally only penguins and scientists reside on this frozen waste land. If you want to visit this amazing place you have to go on a cruise, it is simply the only comfortable way of getting there. A typical trip would start somewhere in a South American harbour and set sail for the Falklands. After visiting this windswept outpost of the British Empire, we would set sail for the South Georgia Islands. This icy world is just a prelude to the huge expanse of ice to be visited after. I can imagine life on the ship being very comfortable. With very low temperatures outside, the heated swimming pool, the cozy restaurants and the entertainment facilities will keep us warm during the cold nights. The nights won’t be long though, as in summer the days last for as much as 20 hours, so there is not really a need for sleeping. There is so much to see, so why waste it in your hut? After a week we will arrive on Antarctica proper. I would go and see the penguin colonies. I would ride a snow scooter on the virgin snows; I would ski towards the mountains. If I have a chance I would like to go diving in a special suit to see the sea lions play under the ice. Most people would go on a cruise to a tropical destination, most people would go to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean or Asia, but I would choose the frozen worlds of the Southern Ocean.

A place unspoiled by humans, a place where animals are in charge and where nature makes the rules. A cruise to Antarctica would be a dream come true.

For any one who likes to see a lot of the world, but a little at a time, cruise ships are the perfect was to travel. I enjoy sight-seeing and, given my interest in history, also site-seeing, so a cruise around the Greek Islands and Turkey has always appealed to me.

Where else can you get the splendour of ancient history and excellent weather in one package? Of course there are coach holidays that will whisk you around the wonders of the Roman and Ottoman Empires but I have tried these and they are exhausting, constantly packing and unpacking as you change cities and hotels, to say nothing of the swollen ankles from long hours of sitting. What better then than to sail into Bodrum Harbour on board a magnificent cruise ship, with all the comforts of a luxury hotel, and no worries about making sure your suitcases are safely following you from port to port. Your cruise ship will offer you all the comforts you could ask for, from fine dining or takeaway pizza to the latest blockbuster movie or Broadway style show. Dress for dinner or take it easy, many cruise ships now offer the informality that appeals more to families with young children.

If you enjoy the glitz of the Casino you can chance your luck at Roulette or Blackjack, after all, you have been soaking up culture all day on your pre-booked trip to Ephesus or Athens or wherever your fancy takes you, so you’ve certainly earned your evening treats. It was great fun to leave the casino $50 in profit! Then your comfortable cabin awaits you, with your bed turned down and your chocolate on your pillow, complimentary bathrobe and the privacy of your own balcony if you wish to sit outside and watch the world sail by. You may choose not to leave the ship if you would rather have a day on board, in the pool or visiting the spa or taking advantage of one of the many activities the crew have on offer.

On my last cruise, I took Tai Chi classes in St Petersburg, played mini golf in Stockholm and learned how to improve my digital photography in Estonia. There is so much choice of where to go and what to do and it is certain that you will never be bored on a cruise holiday, with a crew whose job, and pleasure, it is to make sure you are always well looked after and entertained. Your first cruise is rarely your last cruise, now, where did I put that booking form?

Taking a vacation on a cruise ship can be a fun and interesting way to spend a holiday. Whether you’re taking a romantic holiday with your partner or spending quality time with your family, cruises offer a variety of delights for every traveller. One of the great things about cruise holidays is that they are an affordable way to spend a vacation in a luxurious and exciting environment. Many different types of cruise packages can be found online. Cruise ship holidays and cruise deals are easily found with simple internet searches or visits to major travel websites. These cruise vacation packages can be found to fit every budget and every vacation schedule. Three- and four-night cruise holidays are not uncommon, and weeklong cruise deals are available as well. There really is something for everyone on a cruise holiday.

For those who are seeking a relaxing getaway from the day to day grind, there are plenty of opportunities to sit back, relax, and soak in the sun on the deck of a luxurious cruise ship. For those seeking a little more adventure, many cruises offer amenities you might not expect to find on a ship, including everything from water slides to rock climbing walls. For those seeking premiere entertainment, cruise ships present fabulous musical and comedy acts rivalling anything you could find on the Las Vegas strip. And let’s not forget the food.

Cruise ships are famous for their endless buffets and fine dining, all of which is usually included in the all-inclusive package in your cruise holiday deal. A cruise deal really is the way to go. Mention a cruise vacation package, and most people will think of exotic, tropical ports-of-call with sandy beaches and palm trees in abundance, but cruise deals can be found to other destinations, too. Cruise holidays are available to all corners of the globe, and at very affordable prices to boot. If it touches the sea, you can probably get there on a cruise ship.

My husband and I took our first cruise this year. We were excited but a little apprehensive, as we were not sure what to expect. But, like so many others, it only took one cruise and now we are hooked! Aside from the convenience of getting to visit several destinations while sleeping in the same bed each night, we found that many of our previous fears were unfounded. We were most worried about cabin size. And yes, they were small, but after running around the boat, dancing, eating and eating some more, all you really need when you get back to your room is a bed.

The bathrooms were really where you noticed the size constraints. My 6 foot 5 husband had a bit of trouble maneuvering into the tiny shower, but he made it work. And you could practically brush your teeth while sitting on the toilet, but again, in the grand scheme of things, not too bad of a problem. So the small size wasn’t really an issue. Though if there will be more than two of you in a room, I would defiantly think about upgrading to a suite. We were also concerned about food. I am a vegetarian, and my husband has dietary restrictions. We had no need to worry though, there was an overabundance of foods that fit our needs, and they were more than willing to make special meals where needed.

In fact, I would have to say the worst thing about the food was there was too much of it. Towards the end of our trip my clothes was getting pretty tight. I think my favorite thing about the cruise was that I could totally relax. No worries about what time to leave, getting directions, or who was driving. It was all done for me. It really gave my husband a sense of total relaxation. While choosing our next trip, I have examined in detail several different boats and have found that the amenities are quite similar across most of the middle class boats. So I am letting destination be the deciding factor for my next cruise.

Taking a vacation cruise with the family is the ideal way of getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life. After spending weeks in a crowded office your soul is yearning for freedom. You just want to sail way into the distant horizon and the setting sun. Well, that is possible now. All you have to do is to book yourself and your family on a nice cruise ship for a holiday destination of your choice. You have several options to choose from. You can go to the Caribbean and visit romantic places such as Kingston, Barbados, St. Lois or the Cayman islands.

You can even set sail for the blue turquoise waters of the Bahamas. There are plenty of places and the British Virgin Islands have beaches that would pull you like a magnet. You can even go on an Alaskan Cruise. This cruise would take you along the Canadian coast and right up to Alaska. You can watch the sperm whales and the Orcas or killer whales. It is a beautiful and rugged coastline with wilderness so beautiful that you will remember it for the rest of your life. Some cruise ships offer a longer cruise and you could be away from home for more than a month. Would you dare to consider taking a cruise across the Atlantic to the Greek Islands in the Aegean Sea? Wouldn’t that be romantic?

There are cruise ships which sail across the Mediterranean and reach some romantic ports of call. Some of these ports are in Croatia, France, and Italy. Finally there are the Norwegian cruises. These are for the true nature lovers. The ships cruise through the Norwegian fjords and rivers and reach exotic places.

Sweden and Norway are considered as wonderful destinations for cruises. You can even go on a world cruise but that would be quite expensive and could take up to a year. The above mentioned cruises are all short duration cruises lasting a few weeks at the most. There is never a dull moment on the modern cruise liner. The ships have every conceivable amenity and luxury you could possibly think about. The staterooms are very comfortable and the food is quite exotic. The crew is very friendly and you have the added advantage of getting to meet new people. Cruise ships are magical and it is something everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

Cruise ship Holidays are one of the modern luxury and entertainment marvels that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. The cruise industry offers a variety of options when it comes to the type of cruise that best suits your ideal vacation. While most people imagine the gigantic ocean liner stuffed with thousands of passengers set on buffets, gambling and cocktail parties, it should be pointed out that there are many alternatives on smaller, quieter and more focused ocean liners. The smaller cruise ship is one that is often overlooked as they are typically dwarfed by many of the more visible and highly promoted mega-liners.

Many smaller ships, carrying only a few hundred or less passengers, can get you to more exotic locations that the giant ships cannot get to. They are typically more accepted by the locals at the destination, as their town is not getting bombarded by thousands of tourists, which will allow you to experience more of the culture of your destination. While you may have to give up the movie theater, the casino, the waterslides and some of the other over the top amenities a large ship will offer, you will still find the fine dining, luxurious state rooms and most likely a higher level of customer service than you would see elsewhere. Many people have forgotten that a cruise is about enjoying the sea and a way of travel that moves imaginations, and has become somewhat obsolete. That is where the true cruise enthusiast will enjoy their time on a ship of better proportions. Many smaller ships also offer themes suited to a particular group of like minded individuals.

There are cruises focused on the arts, history, astronomy and just about any other subject you can imagine. More likely than not, if you are interested in the theme of the cruise, you’re likely to find that your fellow passengers are too. If you want to sail on an amusement park, just go to an amusement park. But if you want to enjoy the smell of the sea, the adventure of seeking new and exciting destinations, while enjoying a little luxury, take the time to speak to a travel agent and find a boutique ship to enjoy your cruising holiday.
